Quite often folks ask if cold sores and canker sores are the same or different.

Cold sores and canker sores are actually not related at all, even though they often appear very similar and in the mouth area.

A cold sore is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2. Cold sores most often occur on the outside of the mouth or nose - usually on the edge of the lip or nostril. They can appear, on occasion, on the hard part inside the mouth, such as the roof of the mouth.

A canker sore, on the other hand is thought to be caused by bacterial reaction - perhaps an allergy. Canker sores most often occur on the soft mucus membrane inside the mouth or on the gums.

Canker sores, although smaller, can look very similar to a cold sore.

But the most noticeable similarity is the pain. Very painful indeed are canker sores. Inside the mouth or nose, in the mucus membranes, the nerves are plentiful and very close to the surface.

For effectively treating a cold sore, an anti-viral topical cold sore remedy is most preferred. An anti-bacterial treatment would not touch the virus but could prevent a secondary bacterial infection of the cold sore, especially when in full bloom. How Does Herpes Gladiatorum Spread ?

Herpes gladiatorum is spread, normally, through direct contact with another person or object containing active herpes simplex virus on the surface.

Herpes gladiatorum is basically identical in cause and form to cold sores, fever blisters, or oral herpes. The only difference is location of the sores.

Cold sores, fever blisters, or oral herpes sores – whatever name you choose - defines a facial herpes outbreak. Herpes gladiatorum is a “body” cold sore – that is, it can appear anywhere else on the body where the herpes simplex virus was able to penetrate the skin barrier.

In the case of herpes gladiatorum spread, the most common source object of infection is a contaminated wrestling mat. In fact, wrestlers often refer to herpes gladiatorum as “mat herpes”.

Because of the moist, sweaty surface of the mats, the herpes simplex virus can live for many hours, waiting for a new host.

Cuts, scrapes and mat burns are an everyday occurrence for grapplers. Combine this with a mat contaminated with living herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2 and you have another case of herpes gladiatorum spread.

The rash is common with an initial herpes infection – whether on the face or general body areas. Sometimes the rash is barely noticeable – and sores are not always present during this initial infection phase. Each person is different, of course, but in many cases, the initial infection phase goes totally unnoticed.

About 45% of these folks will never get a reoccurrence – thus they will never know that they even have herpes virus living in their bodies unless tested for herpes antibodies.

Herpes simplex virus lives, hibernates, and replicates in your nerve cells. Upon initial infection, the herpes viruses will travel to the nearest nerve fibers and take up permanent residence there.

HERPES GLADIATORUM - OUTBREAKS IN NORTH DAKOTA

Herpes gladiatorum claims two more victims at the North Dakota
state wrestling tournaments in Bismark.

Last month at least 45 outbreaks to date were identified from 16 schools
in Minnesota closing the wrestling season for the high school grapplers.

Last week during the North Dakota high school state wrestling finals, two
wrestlers were eliminated from the competition because of herpes gladiatorum rash and outbreaks.

Trainer, Damian Schlinger, stated that all wrestlers are screened for herpes gladiatorum rashes before the tournament.

He also said that more coaches are starting to screen for this on a regular basis to prevent further spreading.

These herpes gladiatorum outbreaks occur in clusters, exactly like facial cold sores.

Schools have become more cautious and are sterilizing the wrestling mats more aggressively and often.

Also, using more mats with fewer wrestlers per mat will greatly reduce the potential of exposure to the herpes gladiatorum virus.

Herpes gladiatorum produces a rash that could mimic other rash causes - but when cold sore looking blisters are also present, as in these two cases, it is considered a positive diagnosis.

As I mentioned in a previous post, quite likely it started with a cold sore on the lip of a wrestler, which then contaminated the mat, and was transferred to many other wrestlers who had scratches or mat burns.

The culprit is the herpes simplex virus type 1 or type 2 that causes cold sores, fever blisters, and oral herpes on the edge of the lips or nose.

It is estimated by the CDC that nearly 90% of the world population is infected with the cold sores virus. As with herpes gladiatorum, it is a lifetime infection.

The virus that creates herpes gladiatorum, cold sores, fever blisters, oral herpes or "below-the-waist" herpes outbreaks normally is latent - hibernating in the nerve cells near where the original infection took place.

Of the 90% infected population, about 40% will never have another herpes outbreak - the other 60% will realize one or more cold sores or herpes gladiatorum outbreaks each year - usually in the colder winter months.

Any outbreaks caused by herpes simplex virus, no matter where it occurs on your body or what you call it - cold sores, fever blisters, herpes gladiatorum sores - are very painful.

The herpes virus destroys the cells on the end of the nerve fibers in their process of replication creating an "open nerve" situation.

Your best bet for herpes outbreak preventing would be a sticking with a good nutritional program and taking a good quality vitamin supplement every single day.

Also have on hand a good topical cold sore remedy - one that you would put directly on the area where the cold sore or herpes sore normally develops - particularly when you start feeling discomfort.

Herpes Gladiatorum in Minnesota ?

Herpes Gladiatorum outbreaks in Minnesota currently totals 42 reported cases from 16 schools.

Herpes Gladiatorum is commonly referred to as "mat herpes" and is having an unusually large level of outbreaks this season in Minnesota - and the surrounding states of Iowa, Wisconsin and North and South Dakota are on watch for symptoms.

Herpes Gladiatorum is caused by the herpes simplex virus - the same herpes virus that causes cold sores, fever blisters and oral herpes. It is spread by close skin contact of judo practitioners, wrestlers, and similar close bare-skin contact sports.

I have mentioned before that cold sores, fever blisters and oral herpes can be spread from the lips to other parts of the body. The virus is not know to actually penetrate the skin, but will quickly take advantage of a break in the skin surface.

Cold sore virus is sub-microscopic - much smaller than a body cell - so it doesn't take much of a break in the skin.

As a former Wisconsin wrestler myself, I can tell you that mat burns (like rug burns) are very common. This, along with sweating, can transfer the virus from one athlete to another very easily. (By the way - I never lost a match in High School wrestling competition).

The initial infection symptom of herpes gladiatorum, as it has appeared in Minnesota recently, is a rash that lasts one to two weeks. Clusters of painful blisters can be present during this initial outbreak, but are usually far more common during herpes gladiatorum reoccurrence - similar to cold sores on the lips.

The herpes simplex virus will embed itself in the nerve fibers in the area of initial infection. This, again, is the virus that creates cold sores, fever blisters, and oral herpes.

You can experience reoccurrence anytime just like a cold sore. And since we know that the herpes virus will live in your body for most if not all of your life, it would be wise to have an effective and proven cold sore treatment on hand.

Cold sore remedies - if they work for cold sores and shingles - will work equally well with herpes gladiatorum outbreaks.

In high schools, especially here in Minnesota, wrestlers, or similar sport type athletes with a rash will not be allowed to compete until the rash subsides - according to the coaches I've talked to.

Further, any athlete with cold sores, fever blisters or oral herpes should not compete until the cold sore is completely healed - including the red spot often occurring after the skin appears healed. This red spot indicates that there is still active and contagious virus in that area under the surface.

Herpes gladiatorum can lead to serious complications and should not be taken lightly.

Herpes gladiatorum is certainly not limited to Midwest states like Minnesota. It can, and will, show up in any state, any country and anytime.

Preventing cold sores may be as simple as keeping your pH at 7 to 7.4. Stress of any sort will cause your body to go toward the acid side. Calcium helps neutralize the physical effects of stress.

We just plain can't get enough calcium or other vitamins and minerals from the food we eat anymore. Thus we suffer from epidemics of heart disease, diabetes, cancers - not to mention lesser diseases such as colds, flu, and cold sores, fever blisters and oral herpes.

We need to be taking supplements. This is one of the best cold sore remedies to try - along with any topical cold sore treatment. Although I've found many doctors are not up to speed on taking vitamins, the AMA did endorse the use of supplements in a statement in JAMA in January 2002.

Calcium, like most all minerals, is difficult to absorb to a degree that it can provide a therapeutic value to your body. There are several different forms of calcium that are being sold.

Here are some of the most commonly sold forms of supplemental calcium.

CALCIUM CARBONATE:

You may see this offered as "dolomite", "bone-meal", Oyster shell" or "coral calcium" but, in reality, they are all just calcium carbonate. In most cases, as in coral calcium, it is just powdered rock.

Your body wasn't designed to digest or absorb powdered rock. Plants are needed to transform calcium into a form that can be absorbed by the body.

Basically minerals like calcium need to go through a "chelation" process either naturally or in the lab. What this means is the calcium molecule is attached to a protein molecule - making it acceptable to the body.

CALCIUM LACTATE:
A natural form of calcium - the type found in dairy products - created by animals who eat calcium rich plants. This is calcium that is "body-ready" because it is attached to protein molecules during creation of the milk. Newborns of any species needs a lot of calcium because they are growing bone like crazy. This is probably one of the best and most absorbable forms of calcium.

This is an excellent form of calcium for use as a cold sore treatment and prevention program for all diseases.

Calcium lactate takes a lot more room in a supplement because the elemental calcium level, as a percentage of the whole, is much lower (maybe around 15% or so) because of the attached proteins.

The most important thing to keep in mind - this is one form of calcium expressly designed by nature for direct use by your body. You may have to take more pills that any other form, but the quality of this calcium is excellent as a pH balancing prevention for chronic diseases such as fever blisters, cold sores, and any form of oral herpes.

If you are a vegetarian there are other options.

CALCIUM CITRATE
CALCIUM GLUCONATE
These are two more forms of calcium that offer excellent absorption. The body recognizes these forms of calcium as food also - because the calcium molecules are attached to the appropriate protein molecules. These may be extracted from plants or created in the lab.

Like calcium lactate, these also take more room in a pill than calcium carbonate but are well worth it.

Keep in mind that calcium is the most common mineral (metal) in the human body. Like water, you just need to get a lot of it.

Watch your pH and you will go a long ways toward preventing cold sores, fever blisters, or oral herpes outbreaks that you might otherwise experience.

Calcium is the most common element in our bodies, and the third most common earth element.

Besides bone and tooth formation, and balancing pH, calcium is essential for optimum muscle contraction (like your legs - and heart muscle), blood clotting, and healthy cell membranes.

PREVENTING COLD SORES WITH CALCIUM - Part 2

In my last post I stated that we can enjoy a lifetime of freedom from oral herpes, cold sores and fever blisters, if we keep our body pH balanced toward the alkaline side of neutral.

Oral herpes, cold sores and fever blisters - the herpes virus that causes these blisters - love an acid, low oxygen, warm environment.

The primary cause of cold sores and fever blisters, in my opinion, is having an acid side pH. The more acid the pH the less oxygenated the cells.

Calcium is the primary way for the body to neutralize all the acids our body creates and all the acid-forming food we eat.

When you experience physical or mental stress, your body kicks out various hormones and chemicals in response.

This generally will cause our bodies to "go acid" to some degree.

Cold sores are primarily caused by stress in your immune system.

For cold sores, I strongly recommend to anyone wishing to eliminate or reduce cold sore outbreaks in their lives, should be taking a good daily vitamin and mineral supplement for their cold sores (fever blisters, oral herpes).

Cold sores are prevented or lessened in severity by the synergetic action of the COMPLETE array of vitamins and minerals provided by a good multiple supplement.

Cold sores, however, have been much researched. Certain nutrients have shown to be quite useful as a cold sore treatment.

Some of these key nutrients found effective as a cold sore remedy:

Vitamin C, B Vitamins, Vitamin E. Minerals that help prevent cold sores include zinc, and the seldom talked about (for a cold sore remedy) calcium. There are also several amino acids (protein fractions) which work quite well against cold sores. The most talked about currently is LYSINE.

If you take a daily multiple vitamin and mineral supplement, as talked about previously as a cold sore treatment, the following are the minimum quantities you should insist on for good health and prevention of cold sores.

Vitamin C - 1000 mg.

B Vitamins. B1(thiamin), B2(riboflavin), B3(niacin or niacinamide), B5(pantothenic acid), B6(pyridoxine) and PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) - minimum daily dose 50 mg. each. I would prefer 100 mg. of B3, B5, and B6. I personally take an additional "stress" supplement which is primarily the complete array of B vitamins and vitamin C to boost these quantities in my immune system.

Vitamin E - 400 mg. to 800 mg. Should include not only alpha-tocopherol, but the gamma and delta tocopherols as well. Also all four of the Vitamin E tocotrienols.

Zinc - 30 mg. - no more than 50 mg. maximum.

Calcium - 1000 mg. at the very least. 2000 mg. is much better for preventing cold sores.

Lysine - not normally found in a multiple vitamin product so you will have to buy separately. Very cheap and very important to prevent cold sores or any herpes outbreaks. 500 mg. to 1000 mg. per day as a cold sore treatment - to keep cold sores (fever blisters, oral herpes) virus latent.

Currently my family is taking an excellent multiple vitamin product called "Forward Plus Daily Regimen" by Julian Whitaker, MD.

It comes in very convenient tear-open packets. Each packet contains 6 medium size capsules of the vitamins and minerals, one capsule of fish oil concentrate, and one capsule of phyto-nutrient essentials. Each box contains 60 of these packets.

This currently is the most complete and highest quality isolated nutrient program I have found. He uses nothing but the finest USP isolated nutrients.

Do Not Take These Vitamins to Prevent Cold Sores

Cold sores, fever blisters, and oral herpes, whatever you call them, can be prevented with good nutritional supplements.

For preventing cold sores, choosing a GOOD supplement is important or you are just throwing your money away. The largest selling vitamin pills in North America today are one per day and two per day drug store vitamins. They look a lot like candy coated M&M's. These are totally worthless for anything, including cold sores. These supplements are absolutely not a good cold sore treatment!

How worthless?

Well let me go on record stating this: you will get better nutrition from a peanut M&M candy than any of these drug store vitamin supplements - and peanut M&M's are much cheaper. This is NOT how you will prevent colds sores, fever blisters or oral herpes outbreaks.

Three reasons why.

1. Vitamins and minerals take room. The daily dose of either the one-per-day or two-per-day will not give you enough vitamins or minerals for your body, or cold sores, to even notice. They are just too SMALL of a pill to give you the QUANTITIES you need.

Picture This: If you were dying of thirst and you got one or two drops of water to drink - would your body even notice the difference?

For your cold sores - even if you took the whole months supply of these pills in one day, your body will not notice the difference. Poor choice when trying to prevent cold sores, fever blisters or oral herpes.

The B vitamins, for example, are stated in "micrograms" with these. With isolated vitamins, you need a minimum of 50 MILLIgrams. It takes a 1000 micrograms to make just one milligram - so, these pills should provide 50,000 micrograms of each of the B vitamins. These drug store one-a-day pills provide only about fifty or so micrograms.

2. The coating on these vitamin pills doesn't readily dissolve in your stomach. What good is this for a cold sore treatment? I've seen these vitamins in bed-pans where you could still read the brand name on them. As you get older, your digestion process becomes less efficient, to be fair. But the easier and more quickly the vitamin dissolves the better, since digestion time is limited for everyone.

Your best choice as a cold sore treatment is a liquid or a powder you mix with a liquid. Your second best choice for a cold sore remedy is a capsule. Capsules are made of gelatin (like Jello) which is a simple protein from the joints of animals. It dissolves very quickly. Gelatin is an awesome nutrient on its own for oral herpes. People who take gelatin on a regular basis will see much better hair, nails, and skin. If you get a cold sore, fever blister, or oral herpes outbreak, it will heal MUCH faster because of the extra gelatin in your system.

3. 99% of ALL vitamin supplements on the market, both good and bad, are made up of ISOLATED vitamins. There are various qualities of these isolated nutrients available to vitamin manufacturers. As a cold sore treatment you want the best. The ingredients in these drug store vitamins is generally very poor quality. The best quality isolated forms of vitamins are USP (United States Pharmacopoeia) or BP (British Pharmacopoeia). Of isolated nutrients, these are the highest grade.

If the vitamin manufacturer uses these forms they will definitely make note of it on the label because it is a measure of the purest and most absorbable isolated vitamins and minerals. If the nutrients are not labeled USP or BP then there is no way to know what you are getting , where they came from, and, most importantly, if they have contaminates like lead and mercury. Contaminates weaken your defense system and could actually encourage cold sores, fever blisters or oral herpes.

A good supplement will provide the highest quality of ingredients, and in large enough quantities to produce what we call a therapeutic effect. Simply put, "therapeutic" means enough nutrition to give your body a positive and measurable effect.There is no way that your nutritional supplement program will be of any value as a cold sore remedy if you don't get proper quantities of the highest quality nutrients - a therapeutic vitamin and mineral supplement that will prevent cold sores.

One last point I'd like to make today.

Isolated vitamins and minerals, even if of the highest USP or BP quality, are not equal to the same nutrients obtained from food sources. Even though isolated vitamins may be extracted from whole food sources, they are not anywhere the same as natural nutrients in plants.

For example - vitamin B6, as an isolated vitamin, is only 7% to 10% absorbed by the body. The other 90% to 93% is excreted. Vitamin B6 from broccoli will be 77% to 89% absorbed. The B vitamins are the anti-stress vitamins and very good at helping to prevent cold sores, oral herpes and fever blisters.

The difference is in nature, vitamins and minerals occur with protein molecules attached. These protein molecules act as "chaperones" - telling the body that this is real food, not chemicals.

Isolated nutrients are totally stripped of these protein chaperones and any other attached nutrients. Picture a Christmas tree with all the limbs stripped off. The tree is still there in its most basic form, but all the elements that make it useful as a Christmas tree are missing.

Any supplement made of isolated nutrients must be taken with a meal. About 7% to 10% of the nutrients then will attach to a protein molecule in digestion and be absorbed. If no food is present in the stomach, these supplements will be of little if any value. In fact, your body will see them as merely individual chemicals and get rid of them.

If you've ever taken a supplement on an empty stomach, quite often your stomach will not feel right and you will be burping up a chemical taste in your mouth.

Whether you call them cold sores or fever blisters, they are both the same thing - oral herpes outbreaks. Each year nearly 97 million folks in the US alone will suffer distracting, painful and embarrassing cold sore outbreaks. And most of them will again go to the drug store to buy some new cold sore remedy that turns out no better than the last oral herpes treatment they used. It is a darn shame really. As far as cold sore remedies go, any over-the-counter cold sore treatment is strictly for comfort. Research shows that none of them have ever been shown to be a cold sore cure.

You can stop cold sore outbreaks and the social herpes tag. You can stop them before they ever get to your lip or nose. Creating an internal cold sore cure is as easy as taking a GOOD vitamin supplement.

Yes- a good vitamin supplement is, by far, your most basic cold sore treatment program. And, in fact, there is no one on the face of the planet that would not benefit immensely by taking a GOOD vitamin and mineral supplement. Even nutrition experts that are very particular as to what they eat - yes, even these people take vitamin supplements. Why? Because they know that even with a nearly perfect diet, especially in today's environment, they benefit from the extra supplementation of basic vitamins and minerals. Imagine how much more you and I can experience with our far-from-perfect diet.

Diseases develop when your health level is lower than it should be. Your immune system is only as good as your health level. Oral herpes outbreaks occur because the herpes simplex virus is opportunist virus that senses when it can get to the surface of your lip and replicate - without interference by your immune system.
If you get a cold sore, it may be because of some isolated incident of stress that weakened your defenses. If you get several cold sores or fever blisters a year, it is a sure sign that you need to strengthen your immune system with nutritional supplementation.

I apologize if I sound preachy. It's that I really do care about you. And research continually shows nutritional supplementation is imperative today.

Cold sores, fever blisters or oral herpes are not life threatening. Certainly not. Nor are most forms of common colds and flu. But if you are getting recurrent cold sores, it is a sign that you have deeper problems to come in the future. Nutritionists and health professionals have been stating this for 50 years and even the American Medical Association has finally gotten on board (see my last post). You can learn to cope with the occasional cold sore, but other chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart problems are not so tolerable. The threat of a potential outbreak of bird flu, which too is a virus, plus other mutated viruses, are constantly hanging over our head.

Taking a good vitamin supplement will go a long way in cold sore prevention - plus protect you from all other chronic diseases and virus threats. It won't make you "bullet proof" but it will certainly put the odds greatly in your favor for a long, happy, healthy life. Plus, supplementation has been proven to make you look younger very quickly after starting a nutrition program.

Vitamin supplements are your best cold sore treatment - if you want to prevent the outbreaks of cold sores, fever blisters, oral herpes.

Nearly 90% of the world population carry the herpes simplex type 1 or type 2 virus. Of these, about 33% will never get a cold sore, fever blister or oral herpes outbreak of any sort.
Why? What makes them different?

Well, as you know, herpes simplex virus is the root cause of cold sores and genital herpes outbreaks. But, understanding that, what causes the outbreaks for some and not others?

Primarily it is their higher immune system function, which is based on their physical health, and degree of stress that the body can handle. Basically, the stronger their health, the stronger their immune system. Their level of health is based on two things: nutrition and exercise.

The most important for a high level of health is nutrition. You can live without exercise, but you will die without nutrition.

For many years, I believed as the doctors did - that vitamin supplements were unnecessary. The American Medical Association continually stated that the foods we eat provided all the vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other nutritional constituents needed for good health.

But the more research I did, the more I found this not to be true. In fact, people with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, etc. were starving from lack of specific nutrients. I discovered that all chronic diseases are due to lack of proper nutritional substances.

When I tried to explain this to my doctor friends, they pretty much kept the viewpoint of the American Medical Assn..

Then a real shocker.

In the June 19, 2002 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association it was announced: "Suboptimal intake of vitamins should be seen as a risk factor for chronic disease, especially in the elderly."

Finally, after decades, they admit to being wrong about getting enough nutrition from the foods we eat. And that good nutrition is essential to our immune system function.

Cold Sores, Oral Herpes and Fever Blisters are 3 names for the same thing.

"Cold sores are cured when the symptoms are eliminated."

In the last post we saw that there is a difference between viruses and bacteria. Infections from bacteria can be handled by antibiotics. But antibiotics do not have any effect on viruses such as herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores. Or the bird flu virus.

To ask your doctor for antibiotics for flu or colds - or cold sores - is useless since these are virus created illnesses. Besides being useless for these problems, antibiotics taken for these can create new strains of bacteria that will be immune to that antibiotic and that will affect the human body in a whole new way. If you have an infection that is clearly a viral problem, like cold sores, flu, etc. - don't take antibiotics.

Currently, with today's medical science, the only way to fight an unwanted virus, like herpes simplex virus, is to encourage your body to develop its own immunity. This is the best of the cold sore remedies. Medical science today cannot eliminate viruses from your body. The cold sore virus will likely be with you for a lifetime. The poliovirus, for example, is still with us today and is carried by millions of people. We don't get the symptoms of polio because we have developed a strong immunity to it. The immunity to poliovirus was the result of the Sauk vaccine, which, basically, helped our body build anti-bodies to such a degree that the virus cannot go through its replication process, thus no symptoms.

Many, in fact most, of the medical practicioners maintain that none of the know cold sore remedies will cure oral herpes. Even my friends at Mayo make this flat statement on their web site.

I disagree.

They didn't wipe out the poliovirus. They just eliminated the symptoms. The virus is still with us but, with our immunity now, this virus can no longer get any traction. Because there are no symptoms of polio, in the general public, medical science claims to have cured polio.

Viruses will always be with us. The cure for any viral disease is to create an immunity and environment in our bodies where the virus - or in this case cold sore virus - cannot get a foothold to replicate and create symptoms (the actual cold sore on your lip).

A disease is cured if the symptoms are eliminated.

Two things happen. First, the virus becomes weaker and weaker when it can't create new virus. And the weaker it becomes in our body, the less likely of a cold sore outbreak. Secondly, if it can't replicate new virus, infecting others will become less and less of a possibility so the percentage of infected people will drop.

So, yes, cold sores can be cured by creating an immunity and unfriendly environment internally so that the cold sore virus cannot create its symptoms - which are the actual cold sores.

VIRUS BEATING NUTRITION - 1

Before we talk about the nutritional cold sore remedies, I think it would be good to talk a little bit about what a virus is.

As we speak, your body contains many viruses besides the herpes simplex virus. For example, everyone carries the cold viruses. There are different types of colds just as there are different types of flu. So you may carry 4 or more different viruses that cause a head or chest cold. Each virus has its "specialty". Each virus causes different symptoms and severity of those symptoms.

The cold sore virus, herpes simplex types 1 and type 2 are two different viruses that causes both cold sores and genital herpes. In fact, scientists have discovered 8 different herpes simplex viruses. Thus far, only type 1 and type 2 have been identified as causing cold sores and genital sores.

Viruses are extremely tiny sub-microscopic parasites. They are so small in fact that they can hide inside an individual cell. Fact is, they need a host to survive and reproduce themselves. As a comparison, bacteria do not need a host to reproduce - it just needs food. Bacteria reproduce by inter-acting with each other. Viruses can't do this. Viruses replicate by forcing the body cells, like little factories, to clone it.

Viruses can adapt to chemicals designed to kill it by mutating slightly creating immunity to the chemical. You may have heard bacteria do this too. When penicillin was first discovered, it was a miracle and saved countless lives. But soon the bacteria became immune and new forms of antibiotics were required. Today, scientists can't keep up creating new antibiotics to take care of the fast changing bacteria.

The same is true with viruses, like the cold sore virus. As quickly as medical science comes up with a new anti-viral chemical, the viruses change and become immune. Acyclovir for cold sores and genital sores worked great initially, but quickly became of little value in killing herpes virus. Famvir is another form of acyclovir but is close to being obsolete now. Even when these chemicals worked well, they didn't rid the body of the cold sore virus but at least helped keep the virus in the hibernation stage.

Science has never been able to duplicate what your body can do on its own.

God created our bodies to take care of themselves. Whenever our body is invaded by different strains of bacteria or viruses, it creates anti-bodies that directly attack that particular strain. Each time you get a cold sore, your body creates new anti-bodies to protect you from the alien invader. As quickly as viruses mutate, so does our body create new strains of anti-bodies to attack them.

That is why vaccines have been so successful. Vaccines don't attack the virus directly, but aid the body in creating effective anti-bodies. Vaccines encourage your beautiful body to create its own "medicine" - by far the best medicine for today's many virus threats - like the threatening bird flu epidemic. Example: polio was a terrible virus that maimed and killed millions - until Dr. Sauk created his vaccine. Now polio is beaten.

Your body creates these anti-bodies using nutritional chemicals in food. For the most part we call them vitamins and minerals. There also are many useful natural chemicals in various plants and herbs. Time and time again, science proves what I have always maintained - God created in nature everything we need to live a healthy, happy life.

For every disease known to man (woman) God provides the cure in nature - just waiting to be discovered.

Most of the time, I've talked about topical cold sore remedies. Cold sores, because they are primarily surface events, are best treated topically. As with any medical problem, the more direct your approach with a cold sore the better the outcome.

During the next few posts, however, I would like to talk about systemic cold sore remedies. That is, cold sore remedies that attack the herpes simplex virus from the "back door". If you treat cold sores with direct application of some of the cold sore remedies I've talked about previously, you will find that they will be much more effective in healing and preventing cold sores if you also use some systemic (internal) treatment with vitamins, minerals and specific herbs that will condition your body against a cold sore.

Even more important than the cold sore pandemic that has existed for over 2000 years, is the possible bird flu pandemic that threatens us.

Cold sores, fortunately, are not life threatening like bird flu. But, any internal nutrition that you do for preventing and curing cold sores, will also protect you from other viruses such as the bird flu. You can tune your body to be "anti-virus" - to be immune against any virus including the vicious bird flu virus. There are literally 1,000's of virus strains floating around. Hundreds of different cold and flu viruses.

How wonderful would it be to have a body that was immune to any virus? Imagine the freedom you would enjoy. Since I took this approach 3 years ago, I never get cold sores, never get the flu, and very seldom get a cold unless I do something stupid that reduces my resistance (like drinking too much beer at a party).

Medical science has been working hard to find cold sore remedies and a cure for the herpes simplex virus that causes both cold sores and genital herpes. They have not had any real success finding cold sore remedies that work.

Acyclovir is an anti-viral available in both tablet and topically applied ointment. For a cold sore, the internal treatment showed some promise initially. The topical cream was a total failure but they keep selling it.

The big problem with drug remedies like this is that the herpes simplex virus quickly becomes immune to it. Which it now has with Acyclovir. Famvir is another version.

A cold sore vaccine is being tested but shows very little promise. It is designed to prevent infection of the herpes simplex virus but won't work on anyone, like you and I, who already has the virus or its anti-bodies in their system. Nearly 90% of the world population, it is estimated, carries the herpes simplex virus.

More and more doctors now agree. There are times when natural science just seems to be the best choice. Often our ONLY choice. This is certainly true, at least right now, for oral herpes.

One thing that I believe is significant in relation to natural remedies. The virus just does not seem to ever become immune to it, like drug company cures.

In relation to cold sores and genital herpes, look to natural remedies for relief.

COLD SORE TREATMENT

Cold sore treatment with over-the-counter salves and ointments is how most folks obtain cold sore relief.

Cold sore remedies purchased at the drug store, experts agree, are primarily comfort remedies. There has been no evidence that any of these oral herpes treatments, whether over-the-counter or prescription, will eliminate cold sores.

Your body, with NO help from cold sore remedies, will heal itself over 3 to 4 weeks. The benefit of most cold sore remedies is two-fold.

First, most good cold sore remedies will contain a numbing agent. This will help you deal with the pain of that cold sore outbreak on your facial nerve endings. In most cases, these cold sore remedies only offer cold sore relief on the surface, as the numbing agents do not penetrate very deep. Thus, although these help to some degree, you will still have pain if you touch or accidently bite your cold sore while chewing.

Secondly, your best cold sore medication will also contain at least an anti-bacterial ingredient. This is very important. If you get a secondary bacterial infection, which is quite common actually, the cold sore could last an additional week or two. Open sores, like cold sores, can easily be infected. If you cut your hand, notice how quickly it becomes infected. Even more so with a cold sore because they are wide open. Continual application of alcohol will clean and disinfect your cold sore.

COLD SORES STAGE 8 - POST SCAB

Cold Sores at this stage no longer have a visible cold sore scab or crust. Your skin surface has totally healed. However the damage caused by your herpes simplex virus is still healing under the new skin.

The oral herpes virus does a lot of damage and the healing process will continue for some time yet, creating a red spot where the cold sore was. There is continued itching and irritation.

You are still contagious during this cold sore stage, until the redness and irritation is totally gone. There is still some cold sore virus lingering around and it may even be in you saliva. Kissing and oral sex is still not recommended. Socially you have a responsibility to diligent and not cause someone else to get a cold sore or genital herpes because of you.

The healing of your cold sore - actually the whole event from start to finish - depends on your current health and what cold sore remedies you use.

Many people take lysine on a regular basis to prevent and shorten cold sore events. This does work for cold sores as well as genital herpes. It's not a cure for cold sores by any means as you will still get cold sores on occasion. One thing I've noticed time and again is that the body becomes "immune" to lysine therapy requiring more and more to accomplish this resistance to cold sores.

For this reason, I would not over-do it on the lysine. When I used to get cold sores, I gave up trying to use it as a preventative and just used massive doses when I actually felt a cold sore coming on - and during the outbreak. It seemed to cause a shorter duration time for the cold sore event.

Since lysine is a protein fraction, it's not likely you can over dose. The pills or capsules, most commonly, come in 500 mg. size, and I would take 3-4 right away when I felt a cold sore coming on, then 2 more pills as a dosage 2 or 3 times a day. This is no miracle stuff but it does help.

If you are being monitored for cholesterol please note that lysine may cause it to rise as it encourages the liver to produce more cholesterol.

I believe that the actual benefit from lysine - why it seems to be anti cold sore and genital sore - is that it tends to raise the pH balance of the body. I think you'll find in the future someone will "discover" this and get credit for a "breakthrough" in the on-going study of cold sores and other diseases.

I'll talk more about the lysine/arginine connection later.

Stage 7 of Cold Sores - The Healing Process

Cold sores (oral herpes, fever blisters), once scabbed over, begin healing from the inside out.

As the healing of your cold sores takes place, new skin form
under the crust.

This will cause continued itching, irritation and will still be painful
to the touch.

The herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores is now back in hibernation
in the nerve ganglia. Your cold sores anti-bodies have defeated them
for the time being.

Your lymph glands that were swollen during the open stage
of your cold sores are nearly back to normal now. Your temperature
should be back to normal, or close to it. Quite likely you will still want
to take your headache and fever pills.

Applying ice during the healing stage of your oral herpes is not
recommended. It may feel good, but it drives blood away from the
area which slows healing. Applying warmth at this point will bring
more blood to the area of your cold sores, and should help speed healing.

What I did when I used to get cold sores - soak a mint tea bag and
warm up in the microwave. Then apply the warm tea bag to your
cold sore. The mint will drive away any remaining cold sore virus. This was always one of my favorite cold sore remedies.

COLD SORES: STAGE 6 - CRUSTING

Cold sores, at this cold sore stage, will crust over with a yellowish large scab. The worst is over once you get past the open cold sore weeping stage.

The healing process of the cold sore begins, but this can be a long process. There is a lot of damage to be fixed. Swollen glands start to subside. The cold sores virus is traveling back to the nerve ganglia to hibernate again. The replication process is over, for a long time we hope.

The pain is still quite noticeable even though the cold sore is covered over. The nerve endings that were damaged by the cold sore heal slowly.

The cold sores crust or scab is usually quite large, hard and unsightly. As one lady put it "like a huge bug on my lip". When you move your lips, as in smiling, the cold sore scab will crack open - ouch! There are some over-the-counter medications containing softening oils that will help keep the cold sore scab more flexible. I recommend olive oil. It does a great job of keeping the cold sore crust softer and more comfortable - and it contains some anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.

Better yet, if you can get some tea tree oil (I've seen it at kmart type stores) use it now. Tea tree oil doesn't smell too good - smells kind of like kerosene. It will keep the cold sore crust soft, but more importantly, it kills bacteria and cold sore virus like crazy.

You are still very contagious during this time. Whenever the cold sores crust cracks open, it will start to weep again. As you know by now, this cold sore fluid is teaming with cold sore virus. You must be very careful not to spread this cold sore virus to your eyes, or any other part of your body - or anyone else's body.

Cold sores, because of how contagious the herpes simplex virus is, can create genital herpes. And that's much worse than facial cold sores. Remember too, you are contagious from the first tingle until the last red spot is gone. On average, from my experience, this is about a 3-4 week period where you are socially sidelined with a cold sore.

COLD SORES: Stage 5 - Open Sore

This stage of cold sores is without a doubt the most painful. The most hideous. And the most contagious.
At this point with cold sores, all the cold sore vesicles break open and merge to form one humungous open, weeping cold sore.

Depending on the severity of your herpes simplex virus outbreak, the lymph glands under your jaw are probably enlarged and sore. If this is the case with you, quite likely your lymph glands will hurt when you move your head to look down toward your feet. Usually with cold sores, the enlarged lymph glands will be on the same side as your cold sore.

If your lymph glands are enlarged because of the cold sore, quite likely you will also have a fever - and will generally feel pretty punk. It may feel, at least in your head, very similar to flu symptoms - rather than a cold sore.

Taking whatever you take for a headache will help improve your comfort by also reducing this cold sore induced fever.

The weeping fluid from open cold sores is just teaming with newly cloned herpes virus, just looking for action. Getting this fluid on your fingers can easily spread the cold sore virus to another part of your own body or someone else's. If you have a cut on your finger and the cold sore virus gets in, you could get cold sores in that location. I've seen it and those that have cold sores on their fingers say they are worse than the lip. The tips of your fingers have a lot of nerves - which provides a very welcome home for the cold sore virus.

Even more dangerous, in my opinion, is spreading cold sores to the eyes. It is very easy to do and can cause permanent damage or blindness. There was a news story just the other day again about a lady who contracted cold sores in both her eyes. She didn't go blind from these cold sores, but her corneas were damaged. She stated that it was extremely painful each time she blinked or closed her eyes.

My favorite is to carry some babywipe type of product. The cold sore is irritating and you will want to dab at it occasionally. Use a baby wipe to dab and clean your cold sore every so often. Most brands of these contain some alcohol, which will help kill the virus - and protect the spread of cold sores. This is one of several helpful cold sore remedies.

COLD SORES: STAGE 4 - PRE-SORE

At this stage of cold sores, tiny, hard pimple-like red bumps appear in the cold sores target area, such as the lip or nose. These are called vesicles and are quite painful to the touch.

Cold sores do not start out as a single cold sore blister, but usually as a grouping of these cold sore vesicles. Cold sore vesicles caused by the replication process of the herpes simplex virus, each form a small cold sore blister, which then merge into one big cold sore. It is not uncommon to see double and triple cold sores side by side. Several times over the years, I have seen cold sores cover the whole upper lip. This cold sore event is real nasty for the cold sore victim as well as the viewer.

At this stage of your cold sore event, your lymph glands under the jaw could start to hurt, or at least harden up and become irritated. This is common, as you may or may not know. You have lymph glands all over your body - and any infection will effect the nearest lymph gland. The main purpose of the lymph gland is to try to neutralize and remove the offending bacteria or virus.

If for example, you get a cold sore on your finger, which does happen, your nearest lymph gland is in your armpit and it will be working hard to protect you from the cold sores herpes simplex virus.

Ice can still be used at this stage of your cold sores, and should help relieve the heat and pain of your cold sore. Ice will still slow down or prevent the progression of your cold sore event. This will be the last stage that ice might be useful for the healing process.

Of all the cold sore remedies out there, the one that I whole-heartedly continue to recommend, can be applied at virtually any cold sore stage with awesome healing from that point on. In case you are new to this site - it's what I like to call the "3-Cent Cold Sore Cure".

At any rate, ice works well at this cold sore stage for pain and swelling relief - and ice is free.

Cold Sores Stage 3 - Inflammation

In the 3rd cold sore stage the herpes simplex virus has arrived at the target area for your pending cold sore. The herpes virus begins its reproductive cycle. More accurately, its replication cycle. You see, unlike bacteria that can multiply on its own, the herpes simplex virus must have a host. It is more of a cloning process. There really isn't any "young" cold sore virus - they are created fully whole and operational.

The herpes simplex virus enters the cells at the end of the nerve fibers on the face. This causes a lot of swelling and redness as your nerve cells react to this invasion. The cold sore virus then forces the cell to create more of themselves - like a virus factory so to speak.

There are various cold sore remedies that can still stop the growth of cold sores at this point. The simplest, of course, is continued application of ice. The cold discourages the process, and will help with the discomfort and swelling.

There are many cold sore remedies. My favorite over the years has kept me from getting cold sores.

Cold Sores - Stage 2

Stage 2 of a cold sore is called the prodrome stage - also known as the cold sore itching, tingling stage.

Here the herpes simplex virus that creates your cold sores, or "oral herpes" begins its reproductive cycle. Normally the cold sore virus is latent but your body has been weakened by some stress and the cold sore virus was able to escape its hiding place in your nerve ganglia.

In this cold sore stage, the herpes simplex virus starts to travel along the nerve fiber to the surface of your lip, nose, or wherever its target area is for your cold sore.

This movement causes the area where you normally get cold sores to start to tingle and itch. You also may notice a burning sensation. I used to notice a dryness, where I felt compelled to use lip balm more frequently.

This cold sore stage could last a few hours to a few days - depending on your current health situation and how you treat this particular stage of your cold sores.

Also, please note that you are now considered contagious for the cold sore virus. There may not be an open cold sore, but the cold sore virus is now awake and active. It even may be in your saliva at this time. Don't take any chances of passing the cold sore virus to someone else - ESPECIALLY YOUNG CHILDREN.

At this point you can slow down or even stop the cold sore virus from creating an open cold sore if you act quickly. This cold sore stage can first come on you while you're at work or play. Apply ice or any cold object such as a can of soda. This discourages the cold sore virus as they don't like cold. In many cases I've seen, the cold sore virus determines that it can't reproduce right now and goes back into hibernation.

Ice in the early stages of a cold sore is one of the best cold sore treatments - and it's basically available anywhere you happen to be. Not only does it discourage the cold sore virus from going any further, it relieves the itching and burning sensation.

Cold Sore Stages

Let's look at the 8 distinct cold sore stages, and what you can do now to lessen the severity, discomfort and length of your cold sore event.

Cold sore stages 2-8 are the active stages and are very contagious for the herpes simplex virus during this time. Usually 3 to 4 weeks is the average life-span of a cold sore. Much depends on your health and choice of cold sore remedies for each of your cold sore stages.

COLD SORE STAGES: #1 - LATENT -

During this stage, the herpes simplex virus, whether type 1 or 2, is hiding and asleep in the nerve ganglia near the back of the jaw on the same side of your face as your cold sore usually appears.

The cold sore virus may "sleep" for weeks or years without incident. Your body's defense "soldiers" keep them in check. When there is stress in another part of your body, your defenses may drop at this location. Then the cold sore virus can escape and travel to the surface to reproduce - beginning the active cold sore stages.

We all have viruses living in our bodies. Flu virus, cold virus, and so on. There is just no escaping it as viruses, in general, are extremely contagious. Part of the reason is because viruses are so small that they can "float" through the air when you sneeze or cough. Yes, you can catch the herpes simplex virus this way - similar to catching a cold or the flu.

If you want to be a hermit, and never come in contact with another human being, you may reduce the number of viruses that you carry, but you will still contract some.

The body normally keeps them in check with our amazing built in defense system.

So, accepting the fact that you are infected with the herpes simplex virus, which 90% of the world population is, then the best situation is to keep the cold sore virus asleep. Cold sores are very painful for most people because the cold sores are formed on the end of the facial nerves. It's not unlike the dentist hitting a nerve. In answer to Jodi M.: yes scientists are working on a vaccine for cold sores.

Currently there is no vaccine for the Herpes Simplex Virus - herpes simplex type 1 and type 2 - available to the public. Many research labratories, however, are working on this approach to preventing cold sores.

For example, scientists at the "National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research" and the "National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases" have developed an experiental vaccine for cold sores.

In tests on lab mice, the vaccine has prevented the cold sores virus from infecting the animals and establishing itself in the nerves, where the cold sores virus like to hide.

The findings are encouraging, but scientists must complete more animal studies on the safety and effectiveness of this vaccine for cold sores before they are allowed to test it on humans for cold sores.

But don't get your hopes up too much. This cold sores vaccine would only be a preventative not a cure for cold sores (or genital herpes caused by the same virus). It would be useful only for those not already infected with the herpes simplex virus - which there are very few in the world.

Remember, it is estimated, on good authority, that about 90% of the world population is already infected with the herpes simplex virus. For all practical purposes, this means "everybody" is infected with the cold sores virus, whether or not they actually get cold sores.

Also, the use of the cold sores vaccine, should it become a reality, would require a blood test first, to determine if any herpes anti-bodies already exist in the body. If the cold sores virus, or its anti-bodies, are present, this cold sores vaccine would be of no value.

In my humble opinion, this particular vaccine will only be good for preventing cold sores if used as part of the child immunization program. Most children by 9 or 10 are already exposed.

Cold sores, oral herpes and fever blisters are all the same thing. The root cause of these sores, of course, is the herpes simplex virus.

The outbreaks, or lack of outbreaks, are dependent on your level of health. Also, how you handle stress, and the foods you eat all come into play here. What causes cold sores for you? Let's take a look. Perhaps then you will be able to evaluate the cold sore remedies that are available.

1. YOUR HEALTH.
Simply put, the stronger your health, the stronger your immune system. The stronger your body's defense system the less likely your herpes simplex virus will wake up and produce cold sores. If you get cold sores frequently, then upgrading your health level will help prevent cold sores.

Vibrant health is a huge topic about which many books have been written. But you know the basics. Fact is - they are both right.

How can this be?

Cold sores are definitely big money for the drug companies.

Now in the cold sores business, Barrier Therapeutics recently announced that they were excited to acquire the Canadian distribution rights for Denavir - a peniclovir herpes simplex virus cream. This is just another cold sores "clovir" spin-off. For cold sores, the most commonly known of these has been acyclovir. There are several brand names of this basic cold sores anti-viral cream. They all seem to be at the 1% solution strength for cold sores. According to Barrier Therapeutics cold sores news release, Denavir is the only topical of the cold sore remedies antiviral prescription product approved in Canada for the treatment of cold sores.

For cold sores, this cream is also approved in the US under several different names.
But it doesn't work on cold sores.

You see, there is both an oral cold sores treatment and a topical cold sores treatment. In studies, scientists found that the oral cold sores treatment worked with about 47% success. That is, only 47% of the adults studied got any cold sores benefit at all. The topical cold sores cream for cold sores showed no difference between those who used this on their cold sores and those who used a fake stuff on their cold sores.

In fact, the scientists that were involved in the "clovir" cream for cold sores, flat out admitted it didn't work for cold sores or facial moles for that matter. They stated that the problem was that the active ingredient didn't get absorbed into the cold sores. These scientists felt that if they could find a way to do so, it would work. I believe it might. They could use DMSO but they won't - or they will use it and call it something else.

I've said this earlier. It really makes me mad when drug companies have the studies to show their cold sores treatment doesn't work but they keep selling it to the public. Greed triumphs.

Another company jumps on the cold sores and zinc bandwagon.

Zinc is an excellent treatment for cold sores, no doubt about that. It is well known as the healing mineral and works very well against herpes simplex virus. Taken internally in small quantities (50 mg.), zinc will help your body heal faster and is a powerful support mineral for men's prostates and sexual organs.

Zinc comes in many different forms.

The zinc oxide form you may have seen is the white ointment that lifeguards used on their noses and ears to prevent sunburn. Worked great for that but is of no value to you because the zinc oxide particles are too big to enter the skin when applied topically.

This is, by far, the best zinc product for a cold sore.

Cold sores are blisters or sores on the face - normally occurring on the edge of your lip or nose.

"Cold sores" is the most common term used for these hideous, painful and contagious facial sores, however, they are also known as fever blisters or oral herpes. The root cause of all cold sores is an infection of either herpes simplex virus type 1 or type 2. About 83% of cold sores are caused by herpes type 1. Cold sores can also be caused by what is commonly responsible for genital cold sores - herpes simplex virus type 2. Type 2 is responsible for about 17% of cold sores.

Cold sores are "location specific", occurring in roughly the same place each time. The cold sores virus is normally latent, or asleep, in the nerve ganglia cells located behind the jaw near the brain stem on the same side of your face as your cold sores occur. The cold sores virus does not normally travel internally to infect other locations - but stays put in the area where your cold sores were first contracted. I have seen rare exceptions to this where the cold sores virus has spread to other areas within the body. My opinion on this is that the internal spreading of the cold sores virus did not come from a current cold sores infection but came from either a re-infection from someone else, or a mutated form of the cold sores virus version.

This herpes simplex virus spreading throughout your body is rare, but it can happen and it can be a life/death situation. Don't mean to alarm you but you have a right to know, and no one else I've seen is telling good people like you about it.
