Cold sores affect nearly 62% of the world population. The World Health Organization estimates that 80% to 90% of global residents are infected with the Herpes simplex virus type 1 or type 2. Of those, 72.5% have one or several cold sores per year. The rest, although carrying the virus, never show any symptoms of cold sores.
